About
When a suggestion is put forward by an individual the youth workers facilitate a discussion about how the young people can collectively work together to implement suggested improvements or additional learning activities.
During the summer it was proposed by the young members that they would like to try horse riding as an alternative activity. A group discussion further identified that some young people had never visited a farm and experienced rural life.
The newly formed fundraising committee identified a funding opportunity that could offer funding for the horse riding activity. The committee worked with the young people to contribute to the application, gaining awareness of the funding criteria and the need to have a learning element attached to the horse riding activity.
The application was successful and around 30 young people participated in the learning experience, which included; a tour around the farm and stables, assisting with the daily chores and mucking out the stables, while observing Health & Safety rules and restrictions. The young people where then rewarded with Horse riding lessons with a greater appreciation of farm life.
