Anglesey, Wales - Protector’s visit
Project: Maes Martin Mynydd Mechell
Amount awarded: £50,000
About
Visiting the Menter Mechell project was a key feature of the Protector’s visit to the island. This community group completed its Fair Share funded playground last year, alongside a ball park which it had previously achieved. It is now a ‘destination venue’ with tourists as well as people from neighbouring villages – the car park is often full and children stop off on the way home from school. The group runs holiday programmes and has a youth council. Dan, a member of the youth council, volunteers at the playground, organising football training and helping children play safely and purposefully. Partly because of this voluntary work experience, he has been offered a place to study sport at University.
When we visited the play area, we were delighted to meet the community council members, community activists, parents and children who helped to develop this community resource, and further impressed to be shown around the new community allotments alongside the play area. Even two police officers turned up to say hello and tell us how helpful these local resources and engagement of the broader community have been in reducing crime and antisocial behaviour.
