Barnsley - Volunteers step up to the mark
Project: Community Development Team
Amount Awarded: £132,716.46
Project date: August 2008 – February 2011
About
The community development team set up a youth provision supported by a paid worker, looking at the long term sustainability of the project depended upon the volunteers developing the skills to take over the running of the club.
Following the sudden withdrawal of the funding for the team the volunteers felt vulnerable and whilst they were willing to take on the responsibility for the continuation of the club they needed some basic training. The problem was how to support the club whilst working with the volunteers to improve their knowledge and skills and ensuring they had all had appropriate safeguarding training, dealing with difficult people etc.
The action?
Foundation representatives encouraged the volunteers and co-ordinated the training from Voluntary Action Barnsley on roles and responsibilities and financial management.
The resolution?
The group have now taken responsibility for the day to day running of the club and have taken the decision to increase the subscriptions in order that they can meet their liabilities. The group continues to grow in strength and ability and have recently attracted some new members.
