Case Study: Little Digmoor Arts and Crafts Skills Swap Club Awarded £1000
In West Lancashire, the Little Digmoor Arts and Crafts Skills Swap Club is an example of how a small project can have a lasting presence in the community. To get started, the club received a small grant from Fair Share Trust in 2007 and since then has become self-sustainable through the commitment of its participants.
The Club is open to all residents of the Little Digmoor community and meets weekly to draw, paint, sculpt, knit, crochet, macramé, make greeting cards and whatever else inspires the creativity of its members. Lead by a true enthusiast, the meetings have developed into much anticipated social gatherings that provide a full day of self-organised activities for the benefit of community members.
Participants swap skills, chat, drink tea, eat toast and have lunch together; the group has also taken over a plot in the community centre where activities take place to grow their own vegetables. Members make a small contribution at each meeting to pay for the room hire and the refreshments, and the Club has received grants from other sources to buy storage cupboards and other equipment. To the West Lancashire CVS, the Local Agent from Fair Share Trust, the Little Digmoor Arts and Crafts Skills Swap Club is a truly sustainable, low-cost, self-help enterprise that provides much needed socialization opportunities for all those involved.
