One Young Person’s Journey with a FST project
Posted on Mon 18 January 2010
A young man had been accessing activities with Voices In Play for some time as a shy teenager. When he was asked if he wanted to join Voices In Play on the young person mentor programme, he accepted and was soon helping the Voices In Play staff on activities, which they and his parents found to bring the young man out of his shell. After helping them out with a Youth Bike scheme, it soon became obvious to them that he had a keen interest in mechanics. When he turned fourteen they asked him if he was interested in taking part in the City and Guilds Motorcycle Mechanics course, which they were running in partnership with Hull College. The young man jumped at the chance and even got his own father involved to do the course alongside him. He enjoyed taking part in the course very much and in June 2008 passed with flying colours. As he had just left school with this qualification, Voices In Play helped him put a CV together and within two weeks he was offered an apprenticeship at a local mechanic's. This young man is currently doing his apprenticeship whilst studying further at college.
