Case Study: Parnwell Outings Group
In Peterborough, a small volunteer-led community group shows that creative fundraising can secure the sustainability of projects. After a successful outing in the summer of 2009 that was funded by the Fair Share Trust, the group decided to fundraise for further trips.
A “bonus ball lottery scheme” was created, in which residents who wish to participate have a number allocated to them. Each week they pay £1,00 and if their number is selected, they win half the money, with the other half going into the Outings Group fund. Through this strategy, the group organised a successful trip to the London Museum in 2010 with 48 Parnwell residents, including children.
The trip enabled residents to get to know each other, strengthened the community spirit of participants and motivated them to become more involved in local initiatives. Additional to the bonus ball, the group also approached companies to ask for pledges and for items that can be raffled, achieving donations like day passes for play centres, kitchenware, and other items.
The Parnwell Outings Group is run by a very motivated community member and the fundraising efforts will guarantee the sustainability of the group.
