Unlocking ‘Unlimited’ potential in young people

Posted on Fri 11 November 2011

Worth Unlimited, a Christian youth work agency, has been delivering youth provision across the Birmingham and the Black Country.  The organisation has been commissioned to undertake innovative youth activities, personal support and learning opportunities in two Fair Share Trust Areas – North Solihull and Alumwell.

Worth Unlimited engage with young people, from a range of social backgrounds, through groups work, work shop activities, detached youth work, one to one advice, mentoring and networking.

Fair Share Trust resources have enabled creative youth workers to develop a range of services aimed at unlocking the potential of young people and raising their aspirations, including:

  • Training young people  in  ABC Level  1 and  Level 2 Youth Work qualification
  • Delivering personal and social development workshops
  • Supporting young entrepreneurs and developing social enterprises that add value to the local community
  • Publishing regular newsletters  promoting the positive stories of young people’s transformation

Other services which have been developed by Worth Unlimited across Birmingham and the Black Country include:

  • A Youth Hub in Bromford and Firs proving a community space and proving provision and support for young people
  • Detached Youth Work building relationships with young people on the street
  • Schools Programmes engaging young people in literacy, conflict resolution, anger management through small group work and mentoring
  • Creative Arts & Sports projects which develop young people talents, skills, passions and enthusiasm and promote personal and social development

Feedback from participants

“I’m like a sponge at the moment. I take in everything I can get when it comes to learning.”

“Young people now look at me in a different way – more as a youth worker rather than just an older youth”

“We are what we are trying to fix - we want to change the community we are part of”

“I want to see young people growing up in a better community that I have had to grow up in by offering them positive alternatives to the lack of options they have within the area currently”

“We have good, close relationships with the staff that run the club and that means we’re not afraid to open up when we talk with them about things.”

“The club keeps us off the streets and allows us to do activities rather than causing trouble.”

When asked what they meant by the word ‘trouble’ – the young people went on to explain; “Hanging around, getting involved in crime, violence or smoking drugs.”
