Students from Alexandra High School were presented by Birmingham and Black Country Community Foundation - Fair Share Trust with a community DVD and a thank you this week for getting creative and sharing their ideas on how to restore Haines Branch Walk, a local urban green space situated off the local high street. Amongst the participants Umar Rashid a year 8 pupil was the proud winner of a £50 Asda Voucher which, was offered in a prize draw to anyone in the community who completed the online consultation survey.
Consultation activities have been running since 20th June 2011 by local residents and sponsored by Fair Share Trust, to raise funding and support for regeneration of this area.
A ‘Planning for Real’ exercise was conducted with enthusiastic young students at the local school, which has been developed into a DVD demonstrating the desire by the future of tomorrow to tackle and eliminate the existing issues of public concern, such as litter, vandalism and general anti-social behaviour and turn the location into a natural urban beauty site. This will be distributed out to potential funders to encourage support to make the students and communities plans come to life.
Local partners Sandwell Big Spring Clean Up and the Waterside Care initiative have collaborated with local businesses and volunteers and coordinated ‘Litter Pick’ and general clean up of the Haines Branch Walk site, Tuesday 21 June, which is also featured on the DVD.

“Birmingham and Black Country Community Foundation are doing a fantastic job in engaging young people and the community to get involved in the regeneration of their local area. By involving and asking the young people at Alexandra High School what developments they would like to see at Haines Branch Walk, it has encouraged the future of tomorrow to feel empowered and also have a sense of belonging.”
